Attended by over 600 delegates from retail and manufacturers of fast-moving consumer goods, the joint ECR Europe – EuroCommerce conference this week was a unique opportunity to explore the changing world of consumer behaviour, breakthrough technologies and the need for collaboration along the supply chain.
Visa concessions on card fees: a step in the right direction
The commerce sector welcomes the commitments offered today by Visa Europe on its interchange fees and associated rules. Whilst this is an improvement, it is only a start. Interchange fee rates, in general, remain disproportionately high in many Member States and this is where the real economic damage is being done. Therefore the commerce sector looks to the Commission’s forthcoming regulation to take an even stronger line to fully resolve the issues at domestic level in all Member States.

Retail looks forward to basic electronic payments for all EU citizens

The Commission is urged to take this same line in upcoming proposals - such strong legislative measures are needed to allow market participants to create competitive and innovative payment models

Official controls: cooperation with business is the key to success
Read moreConsidering food safety to be a shared responsibility between public authorities and private operators, the Commission should be applauded for harmonising the legal framework by bringing together all food chain actors and official controls to enhance official control systems along the food supply chain. However this is a need for full cooperation with business operators in addition to no compromise being made on consumer safety.
2013 - marking 20 years of EuroCommerce
2013 marks the 20th anniversary of EuroCommerce. In these twenty years EuroCommerce can count many major milestones and achievements which have reaped benefits for the performance and reputation of commerce companies, big and small.
