THE RETAIL FORUM

The Retail Forum aims at taking forward the SCP/SIP Action Plan by better understanding the rationale behind sustainable consumption and production.

1. Objectives of the Forum

• identify opportunities and barriers (legislative and others) to sustainable consumption and production;
• share best practices;
• obtain scientific data on environmentally-sound products;
• identify key challenges ahead;
• deepen understanding of current levels of knowledge and data on key issues;
• report on progress of actions.

2. Working methods of the Forum

Members of the Forum are:

• individual retailers,
• commerce umbrella organisations,
• European Commission services.

Participation in the Forum is voluntary and attendance open to all stakeholders concerned by the issues (producers, consumers, scientific bodies etc).

Chairing:

The Forum will be co-chaired by Ms Soledad Blanco (DG Environment) and Ms Marion Sollbach (Metro Group). The co-chairs will set the agenda and draw the roadmap of issues. Click here to access the roadmap.

The Forum is a non-decision-making body. It will meet +/-4 times a year in Brussels.

THE MAP (MATRIX OF ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION POINTS)

The MAP  lists the different actions and initiatives of individual retail companies/federations. Targets are defined where possible. The MAP is open-ended and companies/federations can join in at any time.

Actions recorded in the MAP are grouped into three categories:

• What we sell:  includes actions aimed at selling lower impact, better performing products and services;
• How we sell:  includes actions aimed at limiting environmental impacts from retailers' own distribution activities (stores, distribution centres, transport of goods) as well as limiting environmental impacts of operations through the supply chain;
• How we communicate:  includes actions aimed at informing and influencing the consumer to make better choices and decisions in consuming, owning and using more sustainable products and services.

Reporting:

A first reporting is scheduled after one year.
