Cross-border acquiring - A business case - April 2010

Visa and MasterCard’s Rules (see Annexes 1 and 2) currently prevent ‘real’ cross-border acquiring. While merchants are able to contract with banks in other EU Member States for acquiring purposes, those banks are obliged by Visa and MasterCard to apply the Multilateral Interchange Fee (MIF) applicable in the country in which the transaction takes place. This destroys any business case for merchants to acquire cross-border.
