"EU food labelling must be consumer friendly but not absurd"

Renate Sommer MEP, 28 August 2008

Diet and healthy lifestyles, food safety and adequate food information are all growing priorities for EU citizens and the commerce sector welcomes opportunities to promote healthier lifestyles.

In 2009, the main issue for EuroCommerce was the proposal for a regulation on food labelling, discussed in detail below. Discussions on the fight against alcohol abuse have also continued in European platforms and at global WHO level. Commerce has a long-standing commitment to helping consumers to make responsible choices for health and is a founding member of both the Nutrition Platform and the Alcohol Forum. However, we regret the reluctance of public authorities to accept that, in a demand-driven economy, consumer education is the key to the success of healthy lifestyle campaigns.

EuroCommerce has also continued to provide input on a number of technical dossiers which have important financial consequences.
