"Successful companies, large and small, will be those that will have risen to the challenge
of integrating CSR into their business strategy and purpose."
Vice-President Günter Verheugen,
Commissioner for Enterprise and Industry, Commission website
The principle of corporate social responsibility (CSR) developed quickly following its introduction in 2001, with two Commission communications and the formation of the European Multi-Stakeholder Forum.
In October 2008, a major conference in Paris, 'Partnership and transparency at the heart of European Corporate Social Responsibility', highlighted progress made. EuroCommerce took an active part in this event which was organised jointly by the European Commission, the European Economic and Social Committee and the French Economic, Social and Environmental Council.
In 2009 a new Commission will be appointed and a new European Parliament elected and it remains to be seen whether new CSR-related initiatives will be launched by these institutions.
